NFL Week 5 Dynasty Detour

Dynasty Detour - Week 5

Week 5 is officially in the books, and the road to fantasy glory keeps getting bumpier. Going to take a stab and say your weekend was less bumpy than Mark Sanchez’s. Let’s hit the Detour.

šŸ“ Traffic Report

Let’s take a look at the most intriguing performances and storylines from Week 5, where Drake Maye got a statement win, Cam Ward got… a win, and Emari Demercado made fantasy owners everywhere hit the liquor cabinet.

 Rico Dowdle, CAR RB - 23 carries for 206 yds & 1 TD | 3/4 catches for 28 yds

  • With Chuba Hubbard sidelined, Dowdle put the Panthers on his back in what became a legendary performance, averaging 9 yards per carry. Panthers HC would not commit to Hubbard being the lead back going forward, saying ā€œwe’ve got two good backsā€.

  • Dynasty Takeaway: I don’t want to overreact, but things could get messy, and this could be a backfield to avoid. How can you not increase Dowdle’s touches after that performance?

Jordan Addison, MIN WR - 5/6 catches for 41 yards & 1 TD

  • After being benched for the 1st quarter for a disciplinary violation, Addison turned in another strong performance capped off by a game-winning TD. Addison averaged 15 ppg last season, and has now put up 15+ in both games.

  • Dynasty Takeaway: Addison feels like a player who’s production shouldn’t be sustainable, but he’s too talented for me not to be bought in. His KTC value is a total buy, as I’m higher on him than Devonta, Quentin, Jameson and others.

Mason Taylor, NYJ TE - 9/12 catches for 67 yds

  • Mason Taylor has arrived. After a slow start to the season, Taylor has become a favorite target of Justin Fields. The past 2 weeks, Taylor has led the Jets in targets as the 21 year old has become the clear #2 target in New York.

  • Dynasty Takeaway: With limited options at TE, Taylor is a guy I’d feel more than comfortable starting. If you’re still able to move a 2nd and receive Taylor… do it.

Stefon Diggs - 10/12 catches for 146 yds

  • Diggs had a sweet revenge game against Buffalo, making them undefeated no longer. Another player who got off to a slow start, Diggs has come to life with 22 targets in the past 2 games!

  • Dynasty Takeaway: If you’re a contender, look to acquire Diggs on the cheap. He is the clear #1 target and this offense is beginning to hum.

Jameson Williams - 1/1 catch for 9 yds

  • I mean yikes… Jameson has been known to be a low volume, high efficiency player, but his current involvement is not conducive to fantasy success. This is his 4th straight game with 2 or less touches.

  • Dynasty Takeaway: At this point, Jameson Williams should not be in your starting lineups unless he has to be. If you can move him for a late first, I think I’d prefer the re-roll.

 šŸš‘ļø Injury Report

  • Omarion Hampton place on IR with an ankle injury. He will miss at least 4 weeks. Look to see if you can grab Hassan Haskins or Kimani Vidal, who split snaps evenly, on waivers. If I’m forced to pick, I’m looking to add Haskins.

  • A torn ACL for Antonio Gibson opens up the door for more TreVeyon Henderson touches. If there’s a disgruntled owner out there, look to buy Hendy as this offense finds their footing.

🚘 Fast Lane Fun Facts

Here are 10 crazy stats that made me hit the hazard lights and appreciate just how wild this season already is (before MNF).

  1. Emeka Egbuka is averaging more PPR fantasy points per game (20.5) than Justin Jefferson (17.1), Ja’Marr Chase (17.9), and Puka Nacua (17.6) did in their record-breaking rookie campaigns.

Dynasty Take: Egbuka has been incredible, but here’s a bonus fun fact: teammate Jalen McMillan averaged 19.8 over the last five games of last season when their receiving corps was banged up. Notice any similarities? I just don’t know if Egbuka will continue to dominate once Evans, Godwin, and McMillan are fully healthy. That said, it feels impossible to sell him right now if you’re an owner.

  1. Jake Ferguson is currently the TE1 and would be the PPR WR10 on the season.

Dynasty Take: Ferg continues to dominate. I worry about maintaining this volume once CeeDee returns, but he’s looking like a legitimate baller. I’d hold if I had him…which is hard to do with his value skyrocketing.

  1. Geno Smith leads the NFL with the most interceptions (9 INT in 5 games). He’s only one short of Gardner Minshew in 2024, who played 10 games for the Raiders last season.

Dynasty Take: As I foretold with Flacco last week (right before he got benched), things are looking real bad for Geno. One of his picks was super flukey, but I don’t think the Raiders can keep turning to him if this continues. I’m quietly buying some Kenny Pickett, though I think the future Raiders QB isn’t currently on the roster.

  1. Javonte Williams is averaging 20.7 PPR points per game, more than Bijan Robinson averaged last season (20.1).

Dynasty Take: The man is only 25 years old and ranks as RB23 on KeepTradeCut. Some people don’t think this performance is sustainable…I’m not one of them. Buy while you still can if you’re a contender.

  1. As a starter and excluding injuries, Jaxson Dart is averaging more rushing yards per game (54.5) than Josh Allen (43), Lamar Jackson (39.33), Justin Fields (51.67), and Jalen Hurts (36.4).

Dynasty Take: Dart’s first two games have had highs and lows (believe me, I’m a sad Giants fan), but I love what I’m seeing from his rushing ability. That kind of running provides a solid weekly floor for fantasy. Now we just need to find out if Dart is a long-term NFL starter (I think he is).

  1. Matthew Stafford is on track to throw for 5,110 yards. Last year’s passing leader, Joe Burrow, did not reach the 5K mark. Last to do it was Mahomes in 2023 (5,250).

Dynasty Take: I don’t truly believe this is sustainable. Contenders…let it ride. Rebuilders…why in the world is he still on your roster?

  1. Tua Tagovailoa has the same amount of passing touchdowns as Dak Prescott and Baker Mayfield.

Dynasty Take: This one surprised me…and this Dolphins team is bad. Tua will be playing from behind often, which actually sets up nicely for fantasy. His connection with Waller looks legit too. Somewhat of a sneaky buy-low if you’re willing to take on the injury risk. I still think he remains a starter in the NFL for the foreseeable future.

  1. TreVeyon Henderson has less rushing yards on the season than CJ Stroud.

Dynasty Take: Not an ideal start for Henderson. With Gibson out for the year and Rhamondre being… himself, I do think Henderson takes over soon. This Pats team is actually pretty good. I don’t know who’s selling him in dynasty, but I’d be willing to pay a mid-to-late first easily.

  1. Chris Olave has the 2nd most targets in the NFL this year, yet he’s outside the top 20 in PPR points and just behind teammate Rashid Shaheed.

Dynasty Take: Not very efficient from Olave. I don’t love him as an asset, but if this volume continues, it’s fair to expect better results. I don’t have strong feelings either way. He’s a hold for me.

  1. Bill Croskey-Merritt is tied for 4th in the NFL in rushing TDs.

Dynasty Take: Bill finally broke out with 150 total yards and two TDs against the Chargers. Congrats to those who bought before this week. I think he’ll be solid this year but not a long-term dynasty asset.

Ten fun facts logged and plenty more miles to cover. See you on the next stretch, Detourists.
